In 2008 Eberhard Bosslet designed his sculptural ensemble entitled "stump stools", which consits of abstract reproductions of tree stumps which are executed in three types, each of different sizes. In some cases they are straight and thick, while im others they are slender and spread outwards before apparently penetrating down into the ground.

Through the replication of identical objects, Bosslet constructs a forest formation which here, im the atrium of the Albertinum, enters into a relationship with Stella Hamberg´s "Berserkers", the wild archaic warriors of North Germanic mythology. The dark color of the stumps, which makes them appear and primeval, also fit well into the image thus created.

The English title "stump stools" uses the rhetorical device of alliteration and refers at the same time to the use of the objects as seats. The title is also tautologous, since in botanic parlance the wood "stool" indicates a living tree-stump, without the need to use the word "stump". This reflects the duality that is found in the work itself.

The "stump stools" are part of a series of sculptures which Bosslet has created on the basis of familiar organic forms since 2001, including the colorful group entitled "Inselwachstum" (Island Growth), which the artist produced for the area in front of the new building of the Institute of Physics at Chemnitz University of Technology. For this works Bosslet uses ordinary, everyday things and materials, sometimes things that he has found and primarily industrial materials whose aesthetic effect is an important aspect of his works.

Since 1997 Eberhard Bosslet has held the position of Professor of Sculpture and Spatial Concepts at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Dresden.
