Visiting German Artist

"Supporting Measures". Sculpture. In his first exhibition in Canada, West German artist Eberhard Bosslet will present a series of recent sculptures and paintings. Bosslet's work is primarily concerned with interior architectural spaces and the elevation of found objects from an anonymous state of being. "Supporting Measures", as this exhibition is titled, is an extension of the artist's recent installation series making use of erect post shores or tubular steel structures normally used to support the frameworrk in buildings under construction, or to prop up buildings under collapse. In this context, the supporting elements produce the artwork. Spanned between the floor and ceiling, they establish their own position in a particular interior space without the use of intervening connections (nails, screws, etc.) and function as space-structuring components. Bosslet's paintings reciprocally treat architectonic ideas. His recent works are characterized by a large format, two-part organization and the use of simple, clear geometric shapes. Rejecting the traditional duality of surface and space. his figurations oscillate between depictions of ground plans and illusionistic projections in space. Employing industrial compounds on panels, rather than oil and canvas they reaffirm the material 'existence of painting in space'. Eberhard Bosslet gave a public lecture on his work Wednesday March 30.
